Every autumn, the same thing happens. The first spell of properly windy weather arrives and fences start coming down. Panels disappear, posts snap and gates suddenly refuse to close. The storm gets the blame, but after years of carrying out fence repairs, I would put it differently. Storms rarely cause the original problem. They expose it.
A healthy, properly installed fence doesn’t normally collapse simply because we’ve had a windy night.
There are exceptions, of course. Extreme winds can damage perfectly sound fencing, trees can fall and flying debris can cause problems nobody could reasonably have anticipated.
But many of the failures that appear immediately after autumn storms have been developing quietly for months or years.
The wind simply finishes the job.
The weakest part is often underground
When a timber fence post snaps during a storm, people naturally look at the broken section.
What interests me more is where it broke.
Very often, that’s around ground level.
Timber posts can remain surprisingly presentable above ground while deteriorating where they enter the soil. That area experiences repeated changes in moisture and is particularly vulnerable as fencing ages.
The top three feet of a post might still look perfectly respectable. The section at ground level can be badly weakened.
Then you get a windy night.
A solid fence panel catches an enormous amount of wind. That force is transferred through the rails and into the posts. If one of those posts has already lost a significant proportion of its strength, eventually it gives way.
The weather gets blamed because the failure happened during the storm.
The rot may have been developing for years.
Bad installation can take years to reveal itself
One of the frustrating things about fencing is that poor workmanship doesn’t always look poor when the job is finished.
You can install a fence with inadequate post depth and get it beautifully straight.
You can use too little concrete and still produce something that looks solid on completion day.
You can rush the groundwork, fit the panels, clean everything up and leave behind a fence the homeowner is perfectly happy with.
For a while.
The test comes later.
Ground moves. Rain softens soil. Timber expands and contracts. Plants grow. Gates are opened thousands of times. Wind repeatedly loads the structure from different directions.
That’s when shortcuts start revealing themselves.
I’ve removed posts where the amount of concrete around the base was nowhere near what I would have expected. I’ve also seen plenty of substantial-looking concrete footings where the real problem was that the post simply didn’t extend far enough into the ground.
Putting more concrete near the surface doesn’t necessarily compensate for inadequate depth.
The ground conditions matter too.
An installation that might survive in one sheltered garden can behave very differently on an exposed boundary.
One moving post can become everybody else’s problem
Fencing works as a system.
That’s easy to forget because we tend to think of a fence as individual panels and posts.
If one post becomes unstable, the forces acting on that section start changing. Rails move. Panels flex. Fixings are loaded differently and neighbouring posts can begin taking strain they weren’t previously carrying.
The result is often visible after a storm as several damaged sections.
Homeowners sometimes assume that means the entire fence failed simultaneously.
It probably didn’t.
One component may have been weakening for a long time.
This is particularly important when deciding whether to repair or replace. If one rotten post has snapped but everything around it is genuinely sound, a localised repair can make perfect sense.
If three posts have failed and another six of the same age are moving at ground level, that’s a different conversation.
There comes a point where replacing individual components becomes an expensive way of chasing the same problem along the boundary.
Panels aren’t always the real problem
After high winds, fence panels get most of the attention because they’re the big, obvious things lying on the lawn.
Sometimes the panel itself has failed.
Often, though, it has simply escaped from a structure that was already moving.
This is especially common with fencing using concrete posts and removable panels. A panel may lift or work out if the surrounding structure has moved enough to create additional clearance.
With timber fencing, failed rails or fixings can allow boards or entire sections to move.
Before replacing anything, I want to know why it came out.
If the posts are still upright and solid, that’s encouraging.
If they’re leaning, rocking or showing movement around the base, putting a shiny new panel between them isn’t much of a repair.
You’re decorating the problem.
Autumn follows months of changing ground conditions
The transition from summer into autumn is particularly revealing.
Dry periods can cause some soils to contract. Rain then returns, ground moisture increases and conditions change again.
In South Yorkshire, ground conditions vary considerably even across relatively short distances. Add slopes, previous building work, buried rubble, drainage problems and older properties where gardens have been altered repeatedly over decades, and there is no single neat description of what you’ll find underneath a fence.
I’ve always considered groundwork one of the most important parts of fence installation.
It is also the part nobody sees when the job is finished.
People notice the panel style. They notice whether the fence is straight. They notice the colour of the timber and the appearance of the gate.
They don’t see the hole.
Yet the depth of that hole, the ground surrounding it and the way the post has been set will have a considerable influence on how the fence behaves several winters later.
Yorkshire weather has a habit of exposing shortcuts eventually.
Wind doesn’t hit every garden equally
Two identical fences installed a mile apart can experience very different conditions.
A sheltered garden surrounded by buildings, mature hedging and neighbouring properties may receive relatively little direct wind.
Move the same fence to the edge of a development overlooking open land and the situation changes.
Barnsley has plenty of both.
There are dense residential streets where boundaries sit between houses, newer estates on more exposed sites, rural edges and gardens backing onto fields or open ground.
Buildings themselves can create problems.
Wind moving through a narrow space between properties can accelerate. I’ve worked in gardens where one particular section of fencing repeatedly takes more punishment than the rest of the boundary simply because of the way the surrounding buildings channel the wind.
That matters when specifying fencing.
A design shouldn’t be considered independently of where it is going.
Gates often warn you before fences fail
If I were checking a boundary before autumn, I’d pay close attention to the gates.
A gate puts different forces on a post than a fixed fence panel. Its weight hangs from one side, and every time it opens and closes the supporting structure is being used.
Small amounts of movement therefore show themselves quickly.
A latch that suddenly needs lifting is worth investigating.
So is a gate that has begun scraping the ground.
Don’t immediately reach for a screwdriver and adjust the hinges. First check whether the hinge post is still vertical.
Look at the gap around the gate.
If it was reasonably even before and is now noticeably narrower at the top or bottom, something has moved.
That movement could be within the gate itself, but it could equally be the supporting post.
I’ve seen people repeatedly adjust hinges to compensate for a post that is gradually leaning. Eventually there is no adjustment left.
The hinges weren’t the problem.
Heavy vegetation can turn a fence into a bigger sail
Summer growth can add another problem just as autumn winds arrive.
Climbers, shrubs and hedges can place considerable weight against fencing. Once soaked with rain, that weight increases.
Dense growth also catches wind.
A fence that already presents a large surface to the wind can end up carrying vegetation that increases the load further.
I’m not suggesting everybody should strip plants away from their boundaries. Established planting can provide shelter as well as exposure depending on its position and density.
The important point is to see what the plant is actually doing.
Is a mature climber independently supported, or is an ageing fence now supporting most of its weight?
Are thick branches pushing panels out of position?
Has vegetation hidden the bottom of timber posts so completely that nobody has looked at them for five years?
Sometimes pruning a few problem areas before autumn is far cheaper than repairing the consequences afterwards.
Five minutes can reveal a surprising amount
You don’t need specialist equipment to carry out a basic pre-autumn inspection.
Walk the boundary and look along the fence line.
Posts that appear straight when viewed from the front can show obvious movement when you look along the entire run.
Gently test any post that looks suspicious. Pay particular attention around ground level.
Look for cracked concrete, obvious gaps around footings, rotten timber, rails pulling away from posts and fixings that have started working loose.
Open and close gates.
Check heavy vegetation.
Look at sections exposed to open ground.
If you have garden fencing that has already survived many winters, don’t assume age alone means it needs replacing. A well-built older fence can still have plenty of useful life left.
Equally, don’t assume standing upright means healthy.
That’s the mistake autumn storms have a habit of correcting.
Repair before the weather makes the decision for you
There is a practical advantage to finding a weak post now rather than after a storm.
You have options.
A repair can be planned properly. Access can be considered. Materials can be matched and you can decide whether a local repair or more substantial work represents better value.
Once several panels are lying across the garden, the priorities change.
Now the boundary may be insecure. The neighbour may be involved. Dogs need keeping in. Children need keeping away from broken timber. Everybody else with storm damage is trying to get a fencing contractor at the same time.
What was routine maintenance on Friday becomes an emergency on Monday.
I would much rather repair one questionable post in calm weather than replace three damaged sections after it has taken its neighbours down with it.
So when the first autumn storm arrives and another row of fences appears on social media, remember that the wind may only be the final chapter.
The real story often started underground years earlier.
